Hialeah Mayor Guilty Of Selling His Influence
MIAMI, March 26— A jury in Federal District Court today found Mayor Raul Martinez of the Miami suburb of Hialeah guilty of racketeering and extortion in the sale of his votes and influence on zoning matters in return for about $1 million in cash or property from developers.
Mayor Martinez, who has been suspended from office since the charges were brought against him last year, faces up to 120 years in prison and up to $1.5 million in fines. Judge James W. Kehoe did not set a sentencing date, however, and Mr. Martinez, remains free on bond.
Mr. Martinez continued to deny any guilt after the verdict, and his lawyer, James Jay Hogan, said he would appeal.
Mr. Martinez, a Democrat, contends that his prosecution was politically motivated. Before the Government brought charges against him, he had long planned a run for the Congressional seat held by Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a Republican and political rival in South Florida’s Cuban community who is the wife of United States Attorney Dexter W. Lehtinen.
